Relaxation massage services, while clearly beneficial, are not considered medically necessary by insurance companies. However, on rare occasions, insurance companies will sometimes cover therapeutic treatments for chronic conditions or problems due to an accident.
If you have insurance and are interested in therapeutic massage, check with your company to see whether this is a covered benefit. You may be able to submit your receipts for therapeutic services to your insurance company for reimbursement. Please note: You will need a prescription from your attending physician to establish medical necessity in order for your insurance company to consider your request. At this time we are unable to accept assignment or bill an insurance company on a client's behalf. Clients are responsible for submitting the paperwork necessary for reimbursement.
Comfort, convenience, and common sense are key. We suggest dressing in loose, comfortable clothing. Avoid wearing jewelry and heavy perfume, or keep them in your purse until after the session. Long hair should be pulled back. While it is not necessary to shower before the massage, we do ask that you arrive to the session reasonably clean. Eating and drinking in moderation is advisable before the session. You won't feel relaxed if hungry, but a large meal is not ideal. Alcohol consumption should be avoided; candidates arriving to the session intoxicated will not be seen.
Arriving five to ten minutes before the appointment allows the client a few minutes to discuss his or her priorities and needs. Arriving late after a scheduled time may require that the session be shortened.
People getting massage should only undress to their comfort level. The majority of our clients remove all articles of clothing except underwear (panties/ boxers), and some prefer total nudity. However, it is important to remember that you will be covered in a sheet during the entire session, with only the area being immediately worked on exposed. We ask that any discomfort or unease during the massage be communicated immediately so that we may alter the style of the massage.
Some people feel sore the day following a massage. This is especially true after therapeutic work if a long span of time has elapsed since a previous massage, or if the muscles are particularly hypertonic. To facilitate the flushing out of lactic acid released from the muscles, drinking extra water over the following few days is highly recommended. Stretching and light aerobic exercise are also beneficial. Avoiding alcohol for a day is advisable.
The vast majority of people are candidates. However, there are situations that make massage therapy an inappropriate choice of treatment. Sometimes a condition is an absolute contraindication but more often than not, a skilled therapist can modify the treatment to accommodate the malady. This is why it is essential that you fill out a health history form and apprise us of any medical conditions.
Common sense will go a long way to helping us all get through the COVID crisis. Patience and diligence are our best friends as we wait for a vaccine that will allow our lives to return to some normalcy. Obviously, there are other illnesses that should cause a client to postpone a massage appointment. I respectfully ask my clients to abstain from visiting my studio if any of the conditions below apply:
1 You have been in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID or another viral infection in the last 5 days.
2. You have experienced in the last 3 days a sore throat, fever, sneezing, coughing, loss of taste or hearing, a rash, a stomach virus, severe headaches, chills, or shortness of breath.
There are certain conditions that make massage therapy an inappropriate choice of treatment for certain individuals. Sometimes a condition is an absolute contraindication but more often than not, a skilled therapist can modify their treatment to accommodate the condition. When a client completes an intake form, these issues may be addressed.
It's important to use some common-sense guidelines when considering massage. A few contraindications are obvious- Certain skin conditions. Fever. Infections. Communicable diseases. Viruses. Patients being treated for most forms of cancer are not candidates. A complete list is given below.
