Therapeutic massage is not limited to deep pressure. Therapeutic work involves a series of approaches that serve to alleviate soreness, hypertonicity, and/ or trigger points within specific muscles. For example, moderate pressure plus circular or cross fiber friction works well for adhesions (knots) within muscles. Integrated Neuromuscular Ischemic Technique (INIT) is a highly effective modality for treating trigger points, one of the leading causes of muscle pain, headaches, and poor sleep. For hypertonicity, muscle isolation techniques using Reciprocal Inhibition or Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation are effective. And for many with Fibromyalgia, Myofascial Release, which involves a stretching of constricted fascia that surrounds the muscles, usually brings a tremendous amount of release. Active Isolated Stretching is beneficial as well, and is also useful for relaxing tired, sore muscles after overexertion.
Some therapeutic techniques are done without oil or creams. However, more often they are done in conjunction with relaxation massage. Heat therapy with hot towels and/ or hot stones makes a terrific treatment complement for some conditions. The advantage of this is to relax the areas so that deep tissue work can be more comfortably.

The most requested procedure performed in this country, what we generally think of as Swedish, or wellness, massage first appeared in the United States in the 1800's, and was based on techniques that had been developing in Europe. The methods have since evolved tremendously. Not only have the techniques improved, there is ample space for adaptation based on the needs of the client.
There are certain consistencies within the definition of Swedish massage. Most of the muscle groups are addressed, including those of the back, the buttocks, the legs and feet, the arms and hands, the neck, and the scalp. The muscles are eased using short and long strokes of varying pressure, kneading, friction, and vibration. Of course, the therapist does everything possible to respect the client's comfort zone. At the time of the consultation, so that the client's needs are best served, the client and therapist prioritize the areas to be treated.

A client favorite! A singular experience infused with ritual and spirituality that allows one to connect with thousands of years of history. The warmth of lava stones spreads through the body while gentle strokes do their work at relaxing the muscles. Addictive in a good way, especially during the winter months.

Pregnancy certainly takes a toll on the mind and body. Prenatal massage, when done correctly, can have a wonderful effect, leaving the mother -to-be feeling recharged and relaxed. We use special techniques and bolsters to keep our pregnant clients comfortable and safe during the session.
It is important to remember that women who are in their first trimester are not candidates for pregnancy massage. We also require a prescription showing medical clearance for the massage, as we feel it is important for the pregnant client to keep her Ob-GYN apprised. But for the vast majority of pregnant women, it's a terrific way to escape and de-stress for an hour!

PNF is a type of flexibility therapy. It is based on the principles of functional human anatomy and neurophysiology, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation uses proprioceptive input to improve muscle flexibility and strength. Proprioceptors are sensory nerve-ending in muscles, tendons, and joints. They provide a sense of the body’s position by responding to stimuli from within the body. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation is built on a series of exercises that stretch stiff or painful muscles in the body.
Over the years, bad postural and movement patterns can put chronic strain on the muscles, leading to soreness, stress and injury. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation makes the patient aware of these hazardous patterns and teaches them how to correct them. This newfound awareness also helps the patient avoid exerting unnecessary strain on the muscles and limbs when carrying out any physical activity. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation achieves this by teaching a series of stretching exercises that the patient can adapt into their everyday movements. These exercises combine muscle contraction and relaxation with passive and partner-assisted stretching.
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation is also used as a rehabilitative therapy to improve the flexibility, strength, and range of motion, of a damaged or stiff muscle. It is used to treat lower back, neck and shoulder pain associated with poor posture. During these therapy sessions the patient is asked to contract the affected muscles against a static resistance that is applied by the therapist. A typical session of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation therapy consists of a series of muscle contractions followed by periods of muscle relaxation.
Once a trigger point has been identified, the client is moved to a position of ease. Ischemic pressure is then applied by the therapist. Using a scale of 1-10, the pain the client feels while the trigger point is pressed should not exceed a "breathable 7." The client will be asked to take deep, slow breaths to minimize the discomfort. The client will be asked to activate (contract) the antagonist of the muscle housing the trigger point while the therapist offers minimal resistance. Then he/she will activate the problem muscle, again with light resistance from the therapist. The position is then altered slightly so as to begin stretching the muscle. (The stretching helps restore the tissue to a normal resting length.) These three steps are repeated several times over the course of a few minutes, during which time the pain should diminish from a 7 to 3 or less.
While INIT is highly effective for treating trigger points, occasionally more than one session will be necessary to rid the area of these tenacious blockages. This is definitely the case for clients suffering from numerous trigger points. Poor posture or repetative motions can aggravate them, consequently clients are encouraged to correct those habits that inhibit proper circulation.
It is not at all uncommon for a client to be a bit sore in the treated area(s) for a day or two, especially if he/she is not accustomed to using the muscles actively. But ultimately, the benefits of reduced pain and improved range of motion make it worthwhile.
Myofascia is a thin, almost translucent film that wraps around muscle tissue. It is the tissue that holds all the other parts together. It gives shape to and supports all of the body's musculature. When the myofascial tissues become thickened and lose their elasticity, neurotransmitter ability to send and receive messages between the mind and body is damaged, and the communication between the mind and body is damaged. The condition contributes to pain, stiffness, and sometimes poor posture.
Myofascial release involves the stretching of the myofascia. No oil or cream is used to maximize friction, which increases the transference of heat. Myofascial release may cause a small amount of discomfort as the area is stretched, a sensation some clients describe as a mild tingling or burning sensation. However, if pain is felt the therapist should be notified immediately.
In patients with fibromyalgia, myofascial pain syndrome, chronic back pain or stiffness, and other muscle-associated health issues, myofascial release can be highly beneficial. Myofascial release is frequently incorporated into pain management plans, and patients often feel positive effects after only a few sessions.
